BAM - Bad Ass Moms

Meet Allison Galloway "A Mother's Journey with Her Children's Vision Loss"

Lori & Jenny Season 2 Episode 39

Allison is a nurse practitioner who specializes in bariatric surgery and functional medicine. She has two children, Logan and Zoe, who were both diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called Leber's congenital amaurosis (LCA) that is causing them to gradually lose their vision. Allison and her family have been organizing an annual 5K fundraiser for the past 9 years to raise money for research into treatments for this condition.

Allison shares the emotional journey of receiving her children's diagnosis and the challenges they have faced. This has included navigating the education system and finding ways for her children to participate in activities like rock climbing, hockey, and skateboarding. She emphasizes the importance of not letting others dictate how one should feel about such a life-changing event and the need to find a supportive community.

Despite the difficulties, Allison is most proud of how her children have adapted and thrived, proving her initial fears wrong. Allison also discusses the challenges of funding research for rare diseases and her efforts to raise money and awareness through an annual 5K run.
